Can ChatGPT write my workout plan?

Yes. ChatGPT and other AI assistants can write a reasonable workout plan if you tell them your goal, schedule, equipment and experience. A 2024 study found an earlier model (GPT-4) wrote generally safe plans that were too generic and often too cautious, because it had only one conversation to go on. The fix is giving it more to work with: your real training history, and feedback after each session.

  1. Give it the basics. Tell it your goal, how many days a week you can train, how long each session can be, and what equipment you have.
  2. Say where you're starting. Share your experience and a few recent numbers, like your best set on main lifts or how far you can run.
  3. Mention limits. List any injuries or conditions. If you have one, check the plan with a professional too.
  4. Ask for a format you can follow. Ask for exercises, sets, reps, rest times and how to progress each week.
  5. Report back. After each session, tell it what you actually did and how hard it felt, so the next plan fits better.

What the research found

In 2024, a panel of exercise experts reviewed 30-day programs that GPT-4 wrote for five people with different health conditions and goals. The programs were generally safe. But they lacked precision for each person’s condition and goal, and often put caution ahead of results. The researchers tested a single first conversation, which is how most people use an assistant.

Models have improved since, but the lesson holds: an assistant plans better when it knows more about you.

A prompt that works

I want to build muscle and get stronger. I can train 3 days a week for about an hour, at a gym with barbells, dumbbells and cables. I’ve lifted for 6 months. My recent best sets: squat 185 lb × 5, bench 135 × 5, deadlift 225 × 5. My left knee gets sore with deep lunges. Write a 4-week plan with exercises, sets, reps, rest and how to progress each week. Keep 1 to 3 reps in reserve on most sets.

Keep it honest

An assistant can’t see you lift. If something hurts, stop and tell it. Then change the exercise. If you have a health condition, injury or are pregnant, run the plan past a professional before you start.

Also asked

Is a ChatGPT workout plan safe?

Plans from a well-written prompt are usually conservative. They can still miss your individual needs, so check anything that hurts or seems off. See a professional if you have a health condition.

Is ChatGPT better than a personal trainer?

It's cheaper and always available, but it can't watch your form or see how you move. Many people use an assistant for planning and a coach or video for technique.

Why does ChatGPT forget my last workout?

Unless it can read a record of your training, it only knows what's in the conversation. Keeping a log it can read solves this.
