Can ChatGPT make a meal plan that hits my calories?

It can help, but check the numbers. A 2025 study found ChatGPT's recipes came close to the calories requested, while its full-day meal plans were less reliable. Give it your calorie and protein targets, foods you like and any allergies, then check the totals against labels or a nutrition database before you rely on them.

What the research found

Researchers asked ChatGPT for daily plans at 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 calories, and for recipes at 300, 500 and 700 calories. Then they checked the real calories against nutrition databases. Recipes were mostly close to the target. Daily plans were less consistent; only the 2,500-calorie plans matched closely. The study used an older free model, so newer ones may do better, but checking the totals is still wise.

A prompt that works

Make a one-day meal plan for about 2,100 calories and at least 140 g of protein. Three meals and one snack. I like chicken, eggs, rice and vegetables; I don’t eat pork. Ten minutes of prep for breakfast. List calories and protein for each meal and the day’s total.

Check before you trust

  • Add the meals up yourself, or check them against labels.
  • Watch serving sizes: “1 cup” of rice, cooked or dry, changes the numbers a lot.
  • Ask it to show its numbers per ingredient, so mistakes are easy to spot.
  • Adjust, then save the plan you’ll actually eat.

Also asked

Is a ChatGPT meal plan safe to follow?

For most healthy adults, a plan near your calorie target with enough protein is fine. If you have a medical condition, diabetes, food allergies or a history of disordered eating, work with a doctor or registered dietitian.

Can ChatGPT count calories in my meals?

It can estimate them. Estimates are closest when you give it the label or exact amounts, and it helps to keep a record you can check.

What should I tell ChatGPT for a meal plan?

Your calorie and protein targets, how many meals you eat, foods you like and dislike, allergies, budget and how much time you have to cook.
